Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

Jesus was speaking about the rest that He provides for the inner man.

Why do so many people experience unrest? There is no one answer.

Sometimes the unrest is caused by mundane things such as concern for what will happen tomorrow or distress because our desires are not fulfilled.

Unrest is the result of critical circumstances such as a sick child, husband, wife, or other loved one; or the money is running low-perhaps already gone; or the job is insecure; or the relationships in the family are strained.

A major cause of unrest in the inner man is the desire and struggle to make something happen. Jesus possibly had in mind people who were laboring to convince God to look on them with favor.

Jesus’ solution is that we get in the yoke with Him and learn from Him. He said we would discover that He is “gentle” and lowly of heart.”

The word translated “gentle” was used in Jesus’ day to describe a horse that had been tamed. The idea of the word is “availability.”

The “lowly in heart” statement indicates complete dependence on the Father.

Jesus promised that if we would learn from Him-and the implication is that we would continue to live what we learn, we would find rest for our souls.

So, you may possibly ask, “How can I be totally available to the Father and totally dependent on the Father?”

The solution for arriving at such a place in life is to live out the five command approach of Romans 6:11-13. In this quiet devotional moment, read those verses again.

Please bow your head and pray this simple prayer. Lord, I am experiencing too much unrest in my life. I want the rest that only you can provide. I am going to try Your way, beginning this moment.

Then live out those five commands.
