Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

Receiving God's Attention

But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word.  Isaiah 66:2

The words “on this one will I look” are also translated “I will show special favor.” Another version translates them, “This is something I am looking for.” The idea is that God pays special attention to those described by the words “poor,” “of a contrite spirit” and “who trembles at my word.”

The word “poor,” of course means those who are in need.  The Hebrew word “contrite” means “crushed.” Many Christians have described themselves as “broken” when in a state of desperation. Often it has to do with failure to live the Christian life in accordance with the will of God. Some have said, “I have tried everything I know to do but have never had victory. Likely at some time in our lives we have described our lives as “broken.”

Those who are poor and those who are broken are looking to God. Their hearts are open to the blessings of God. God is looking with favor on them as they look for Him.

Experience has proven that in such situations the one with a passion to share the message of grace has his greatest opportunity to share the message with a fruitful response.

God also looks with favor on those who tremble at His word. We do not see a lot of that. However, when one experiences his spiritual crucifixion, burial and resurrection, he is filled with the Holy Spirit who teaches him the word. He trembles at God’s word when being taught the wrath of God. He trembles at God’s word when taught the character and works of God, and when he is taught the blessings of God.
