Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

Prayer Examples of Jesus

Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.  Luke 6:12

Our greatest example for living the life of grace is Jesus. He was God-man living like us, a man. Scripture tells of times that Jesus went alone to pray—other than His prayer in Gethsemane.

Jesus had healed the mother-in-law of Peter and many others on the same day. The next morning, He got up early and went to a place alone to pray. People could not find Him. When Peter and others found Him, Peter told Him that the people were looking for him. His response was that He must go to other towns and preach (Mark 1:30-38). He obviously went alone to pray for guidance from His heavenly Father.

Jesus went alone to pray following the feeding of the 5000. He told His disciples to go in the boat to the other side of the Sea of Galilee and then went into the mountain to pray. He then walked on the water to them as they were facing a storm (Mark 6:35-46).

Mark 6:52 says, “… they (the Apostles) had not understood about the loaves, because their heart was hardened.” Jesus knew this and must have gone alone to the Father to know what He should do to increase the faith of His disciples.

Jesus also went alone to pray when He knew that plans were underway to kill Him. He also knew that the work of the Kingdom must go on following His death. On this occasion, He prayed all night long. Again, He needed to know what to do. The next day, He chose His Apostles (Luke 6:6-13). They would carry on the work of the Kingdom.

All of us who live by grace and desire to be completely available to the Father have our times when we are not sure of what we are to do next. In those times, we can follow the example of Jesus and spend time alone with our Father to receive His guidance.
