Poured Out Love

Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Romans 5:5

Acts 2:33 records Peter saying that the event of Pentecost was Jesus pouring out the Holy Spirit. Acts 10:45 records that the six brothers who were with Peter at the conversion of Cornelius witnessed the pouring out of the Spirit on the Gentiles. Both references to the pouring out of the Holy Spirit in Acts are translations of the same word used in Romans 5:5 of the Holy Spirit pouring out the love of God in the hearts of believers.

God pours out the Holy Spirit in believers at conversion and the Holy Spirit pours love into the hearts of believers.

There is a third pouring out. It is the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers pouring out God’s love through the believers to those around them—both to the saved and the unsaved. Poured out love from the heart of a believer is one of the strongest witnessing tools God has. God is love. When people can see and hear that love in the life of a known child of God, there is a witness to them of the reality of God and a witness of what God is like.

First John 3:17 implies that poured out love through believers makes ministers of us all.

But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? 1 John 3:17

Poured out love is evidence to us that we belong to God.

We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. 1 John.3:14

Poured out love is preparation for the day of judgment.

Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 1 John 4:17

We participate in this pouring out of love on the saved and unsaved by receiving the filling of the Holy Spirit.
