Our Other Helper (6)

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.  Romans 8:2

The word law in this passage has no reference to the law of Moses given at Mt. Sinai. The law of the Spirit is like the law of gravity. As a child, you likely said or heard someone say, “All that goes up is bound to come down.” Throw a ball into the air and it will come down. It always works. That is why gravity is called a law. It always works the same way.

The law of the Spirit can be explained with the words, “The Holy Spirit does something in the life of every believer.” That something is explained in the remaining words of Romans 8:2.

First, notice that here the Holy Spirit is given another name. Here He is “The Spirit of Life.” The law of the Spirit of life is that He gives life to every believer. This surely means the “abundant life.”

The words “in Christ Jesus” explain how he gives life. Over 160 times the statements like “in Christ Jesus,” “in Him,” and “in the beloved” are found in the New Testament. All believers are “in Christ.” Scholars say that most of the time this means “in union with Christ.” This is clearly the meaning here.

The Holy Spirit consistently gives the abundant life to those who are experiencing their oneness with Christ. This statement is most clearly understood by Romans 6:3-5. These verses tell us that those who have been baptized into Jesus (by the Holy Spirit) have been spiritually crucified, buried, and resurrected. That baptism took place when we were saved.

By experiencing our spiritual crucifixion, burial, and resurrection, we will be filled with the Holy Spirit. The only opposition to our being filled with the Holy Spirit is our flesh (Galatians 5:17).Our “flesh” was crucified when we were saved (Galatians5:24). The law of the Spirit of life is His continually prompting each believer to experience his spiritual crucifixion resulting in our being filled with the Holy Spirit, which results in our experiencing the abundant life.

Continually obey the 5 statements below to continually experience the filling of the Holy Spirit.
