Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

Let the Word of Christ Dwell in You

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.  Colossians 3:16a

This follows Paul’s statement of verse 15 that begins with, “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts.” The entire section indicates that Paul is encouraging the church at Colossae to keep the unity of the church. One of the essentials for keeping unity is members letting the word of Christ dwell in them richly—or abundantly.

Second Timothy 3:16-17 says:

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

A person who loves God and has His word abundantly dwelling in him will not be a troublemaker. God’s word reproves and corrects him. In addition, he is growing in his capacity for every good work. One aspect of those good works is keeping unity in the church.

When we live by grace, we are filled with the Holy Spirit who is the “Spirit of truth.” Because He is the Spirit of truth, He continually prompts us to be in God’s word. Much of God’s word is about unity among God’s people.

Our place is to respond positively to those promptings of the Holy Spirit to read our Bibles. For most people this likely means some adjustments in their daily schedule. For some believers becoming a Bible reader will be a new experience.

When we live by grace and respond to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, we will “let the word of Christ dwell in us richly.” As a result, we will do our part in keeping the unity of the church.
