Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

His Name Is "Jealous"

… for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God … Exodus 34:14

In Romans 8:7 Paul says that the carnal mind is enmity against God. The flesh is so hostile toward God that Paul calls it “enmity.” A judge once said to an offender, “You are so filled with hate that you are “hate itself.” That must be the sense in which God names Himself “Jealous.” Divine jealousy is at the very heart of God’s character.

Deuteronomy 4:24 Provides insight into and expands our understanding of God’s jealousy. It reads:

Take heed to yourselves, lest you … make for yourselves a carved image in the form of anything which the Lord your God has forbidden you. For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

God does not tolerate rivals in the hearts of His people. Calling God’s jealousy “a consuming fire” seems to be a way of magnifying the intensity of His determination not to permit rivals to Him in the hearts of His people.

James 4:5 speaks of God’s jealousy. It reads:

…do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?

Surely almost all believers have lived for periods of time knowing they were not available to God. That inner sense of oughtness that we must come back to God is the work of the His jealous Spirit.

Our jealous God will also lovingly create painful circumstances to remind us of His determination to be the center of our devotion.

Just before the author of Hebrews calls God a consuming fire, he writes in Hebrews 12:28:

… let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.

By living out our union with Christ and receiving God’s grace, God will remain the center of our devotion.
