Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

Healing Tongues

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it breaks the spirit.  Proverbs 15:4

The Hebrew word translated “wholesome” also can be translated “healing” or “calming.” We can think of “tree of life” meaning that with our tongues, we can speak words that bring life to others. With our voices, we can bring eternal life to the unsaved. With our tongues, we can bring the abundant life to the saved. However, we also can cause broken spirits with our tongues. James 3:7-9 says:

For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God.

Our unruly tongues are a part of our makeup. However, no man can tame it. Some who have broken the spirits of others have lived in grief. They want to be free from their unruly tongue. What can a person do who deeply desires not to break the spirit of others and to heal a broken spirit? The good news is that God has made the way for us to be successful in changing our unruly tongues into trees of life.

The first step in making an unruly tongue a tree of life is for one to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior. The moment a person does this, the Holy Spirit is joined to his spirit and he is different. He has become a new person.

Many of God’s children have to say, though, “I know that when I received Jesus as Lord and Savior, I was different, but I still am the victim of an unruly tongue. So what do I do next?” Many who are reading this know that the answer to the question is living out your union with Christ in spiritual crucifixion, burial and resurrection.

Below this article, there are five statements found in the book of Romans. Just read them and obey them and God will begin to take away the unruly tongue and give you a tongue that is a tree of life.
