Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

God's Encouragers

The book of Acts, chapter two, records the sending of the Holy Spirit into the hearts of the believers. Jesus had promised more than one time that He would come again. One such promise is recorded in John 16:7. Jesus says:

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you

In several of His promises that the Spirit would come, Jesus called the Holy Spirit “the Comforter,” as in the passage above. The word translated “Comforter” contains several ideas. One of those ideas is that of “encourager.”

When a believer is filled with the Holy Spirit, he receives a continual flow of encouraging thoughts from the Holy Spirit. The Spirit-filled believer is able to live above hopelessness, discouragement, and depression.

But there is more for the Spirit-filled believer than just receiving comfort and encouragement. He also becomes the channel of the indwelling Spirit for the lifting up of others.

There is discouragement and depression everywhere we go. No believer should think that he is to be the instrument of encouragement for everyone who needs help.

However, every Spirit-filled believer should believe that he is to be the instrument of encouragement to some who need help. And those who do need encouragement will be pointed out to him, as he permits the Spirit to lead him.

Spirit-filled people are waiting for direction from the Lord to present the Gospel of Jesus to the unsaved. And all of God’s children should praise the Lord for that. But let the Spirit-filled ones wait for the guidance of The Comforter within to be a comforter to the discouraged and depressed around him.

And how does it all happen? It happens through the believer obeying the five commands for living by grace.

Try it! There are plenty of people who need to be encouraged by you.
