Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

Faithful Under Pressure

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.  Romans 12:2

When Jesus came into our lives, we were crucified to the world. We were raised from the spiritually dead ones.

Paul, though, in the famous Romans 12:2 passage indicates that some believers will be attracted by worldly culture. They are attracted to live as though they have never received Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

Paul calls yielding to the desire to fit in with our culture conforming to the world. What would make a person in whom Jesus Christ lives desire to conform to the world?

There are many and varied answers to this question. The most prevalent answer is probably the desire for acceptance. Being rejected by others is a painful experience. We want others to like us.

In Romans 12:2 Paul exhorts us not to yield to the desire to be liked but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. This results in knowing and approving the will of God.

Ephesians 4:23 exhorts us to be renewed in the spirit of our minds. The entire passage reads:

… put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and … put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.  Ephesians 4:22-24

The renewing of the spirit of our minds is the result of putting off the old man and putting on the new man.

We put off the old man and put on the new man by living out our union with Christ. One of the good results of doing so is being faithful to God while being pressured by our own desires and by the non-Christian world to conform to the world.
