Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

Faith for the Present and the Future

… who by faith conquered kingdoms, performed {acts of} righteousness, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received {back} their dead by resurrection …  Hebrews 11:33-35a

Hebrews 11:33-35a gives a list of victories that God gave to Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets. They were victorious because of their faith. And at the same time their immediate needs were met. All people of faith have received instant miracles from God in times of urgent need.

We as believers will always face circumstances when we will need the help of an instantaneous act of God. Hebrews 11, which is known as the faith chapter in the Bible, shows us that we can trust God to act on our behalf in all of those times.

A larger portion of Hebrews 11 describes victories of faith concerning believers’ future needs. Consider Abraham:

By faith he [Abraham] lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign {land,} dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.  Hebrews 11:9-10

Referring to the faith of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Sarah concerning their victories of faith for the future, Hebrews 11:13 says:

All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.

Hebrews 11:16 comments on God’s response to those whose faith reached into the future:

… therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

Believers must always remember that when we live by faith, we are living by grace. By faith we experience victories in times of our present and future needs.
