Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

Don't Fight the Pressure

“… but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain [spring] of water springing up into everlasting life.”  John 4:14

Jesus made this statement to the Samaritan woman who was at the well. He was referring to the Holy Spirit who works in the lives of believers. It is a vivid and revealing picture.

When a believer becomes slack in his availability to God, the Holy Spirit pressures him to return to his decision to make Jesus his Lord and Savior. Some believers fight this pressure but it is a useless fight. The Holy Spirit continues to pressure the believer to stay faithful to Jesus his Lord. In a passage contrasting living in the flesh and living in the Spirit Paul writes:

For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh …  Galatians 5:17

Before a believer receives Jesus as his Savior, his flesh is in full control of his life. When he accepts Jesus as his Savior, the Spirit of Christ comes in to have full control. One of the results is the spiritual warring between the Spirit and the flesh. However, it is not necessary for a believer to live with this inner conflict between the Spirit and the flesh. There is a way to live without it.

One must understand that the Holy Spirit will never even for a moment cease seeking to have full control of the believer’s life. The flow from the spring will never stop. All believers must accept this fact.

The believer can deal with the inner conflict successfully because the flesh was crucified when he received Jesus as his Lord. All a believer has to do to be free from the inner conflict is to experience his union with Christ. When a believer continues to experience his union with Christ, his flesh will be kept powerless. The conflict will cease.

Galatians 5:22 says that the fruit of the Spirit is peace. When we experience our union with Christ and we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we will be at peace with our Master and ourselves. Do not fight the pressure. Let the Holy Spirit be in full control of your life.
