Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

Doing the Work of God

Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent."  John 6:29

Jesus made this statement in answer to the question, "What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?" Notice that Jesus’ answer was not the “works of God.” It was the “work” of God. In saying this, Jesus reduced the idea of works to one thing—continuing to believe in Him.

When we believe in Him, we believe what Scripture says about Him. We believe that He was crucified, buried and resurrected as “The Last Adam.” When we believe in Him, we joyfully give priority to experiencing our own crucifixion, burial and resurrection which Jesus made possible. When we believe in Him, we do the things He wants us to do.

Read Hebrews 8:10 concerning the New Covenant and the work of the Spirit of Christ in our lives.

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

When we believe in Jesus, we follow the guidance and prompting of the Holy Spirit.

In John 14:12 Jesus says:

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

Here Jesus speaks of believers doing greater works than He has done when they do the one work of believing in Him.
