Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness”  1 Corinthians 3:19

In Romans 1:22, Paul was talking about our sin nature when he wrote the words “Professing themselves to be wise.” Then he added the words, “they became fools.” The entire sentence sounds very much like 1 Corinthians 3:19 which is a quote from the first part of Job 5:13.

The word catches, in I Corinthians 3:19, is explained in Job 5:14 which says those who live by their own craftiness:

… meet with darkness in the daytime, And grope at noontime as in the night … Job 5:13-14

When we live by our own wisdom, we are crafting our own plans. We are living in foolishness. We read in 1 Corinthians 3:20 that we are living with thoughts that are futile. The result is that we are caught by God. We are trapped in our own craftiness. We are headed for failure.

It is no wonder that so much of what we do for the Kingdom of God in our own wisdom and power ends in failure. Continuing our service to God with that approach will result in more failure.

First Corinthians 3:19-20 explains why there is so much burnout in the lives of serious-minded servants of God.

Many of us can testify that we had some victories as a result of our work in the Kingdom before we understood and began living the life of grace. For the most part, though, we were frustrated because God was not often blessing our labor for Him.

According to Ephesians 2:10, God has planned a life for each of us. Living God’s planned life for us under in His wisdom and power leaves us with a sense of fulfillment and results in fruit for God.

We must get beyond making our own plans for God. We must move to the life where we receive our wisdom and power from God. When we live the life of grace, we receive our wisdom and power from God.

If we are already living the life of grace, let us encourage our friends who are serving God in a state of burnout to join us in experiencing the wisdom and power of God in their service to God.
